Donate
STAR accepts donations of clothing, household goods, sports equipment, and other used and new items Tuesdays from 9 am – Noon and during our shopping hours, Wednesday and Thursday, 10 am-4 pm. Please come to the donations door facing Main Street and enter the building there. A STAR Partner will receive your donation and help you unload from your care, if possible.
If you are donating furniture and other large or heavy items, it is helpful to know in advance, especially if you have a large number of items. If you have the capability to bring help for unloading heavy items, we greatly appreciate it.
We ask that patrons please NOT leave donations outside the door. Items left outside our building are often damaged by weather or taken by persons for their personal use. The best way for us to honor your gifts is to come during our business hours.
Mission & Vision
Second Time Around Resale (STAR) is a ministry of First United Methodist Church of Gainesville, TX, founded in 1976 by Eula West to help serve the needs of the community. Each year, we invest tens of thousands of dollars in the work of Community Partners. Additionally, we welcome thousands of Neighbors and friends into our retail store, offering them kindness and grace in the name of Jesus Christ. We are proud to continue Mrs. West’s work of generosity and compassion by offering ministry guided by the following ideals of Mission and Vision.
The Mission of STAR is: To participate in God’s economy of abundance by Sharing gifts, Telling our story, Attending to others, and Rejoicing always.
At STAR, we envision: A neighborhood where all are welcome and everyone has enough.
Become a Partner (Volunteer)
Second Time Around Resale is staffed completely by volunteers, whom we call “Partners,” since those who share their time in this way are truly partners in our ministry. STAR Partners are all ages and stages in life, from students as young as elementary age to persons well into their 80s and even 90s! We are happy to have your talents and gifts to add to our mix, whether you can offer a strong back, a friendly welcome, or a steady hand.
Typical jobs done by Partners are:
- Sorting and pricing merchandise
- Receiving donations
- Stocking the sales areas
- Greeting customers
- Cashier/Point of Sale.
We also have created positions to utilize the specific gifts and interests of those who want to volunteer, especially when persons have expertise in some area related to technology or retail. Whatever it is you like to do, we can find a way to put you to work! Our only qualification for Partners is that they accept and participate fully in our Mission and Vision.
Most of our volunteers work a full or half day shift. Many are able to be with us weekly, but some come one day each month. Our Team Leads and Inventory Coordinators are available to speak with you about becoming a STAR Partner!
Neighbors
We like to call our customers “Neighbors,” both because the Christian Scriptures call us to welcome all people as our neighbors and because so many of our regular visitors really are our neighbors. We believe that offering people a warm welcome helps them feel valued and appreciated and that kindness changes the world. Won’t you be our Neighbor?
Funds
STAR is proud to have been founded on the principle of generosity to our community. Revenues from sales and donations fund tens of thousands of dollars in giving to organizations in our community that serve those in need. We seek to make investments with our funding, rather than simply to offer financial support. In other words, we look for those people and organizations that are changing lives: It’s the “give a person a fish and they eat for a day … teach a person to fish and they eat for a lifetime” kind of philosophy that drives our giving.
Our list of beneficiaries is long and distinguished! We are proud to have offered significant gifts to support the work of:
- VISTO (Volunteers In Service To Others)
- Boys & Girls Clubs of Cooke County
- Meals on Wheels of Cooke County
- CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates)
- DASH (supplemental food support for seniors)
- The Learning Tree Preschool
- Abigail’s Arms
- and many others!
